The Tattoo Taboo is a web-based documentary that explores Western societies’ biases and prejudices against tattoos. Many tattooed individuals experience difficulties in everyday life and workplace discrimination due to the usually negative connotations of tattoos, particularly for women. The Tattoo Taboo argues that tattooing, is not necessarily a sign of rebellion or fashion trends, but a cultural and social expression of one’s self. By integrating interactivity through video, text and images, The Tattoo Taboo provides a collection of stories behind the tattoos of different individuals, and hopes that a deeper understanding of their personal experiences and choices will change society’s harsh perceptions of tattooing. The documentary utilises a non-linear navigational structure to allow users to navigate between personal memoirs and factual data to create a well-rounded, multimodal learning experience.
